Frequently asked questions

What kind of businesses does Tandem buy?

Established, high-quality service businesses that are known for doing excellent work. We work in both residential and commercial services and trades. We typically look for $500,000 to $3 million in annual earnings, a sustained record of profitability, and a capable team that will stay with the company.

Is Tandem a private equity firm?

We are not a traditional PE firm. We are an entrepreneurial holding company built for long-term ownership. We don’t have a fund with a timeline to sell, so we can focus on running the business well and growing it for years to come.

Do I have to leave after I sell?

No. Whether you want to keep building or gradually step back, you can realize value today and keep a hand in what comes next. We shape your role together, and it can change over time.

Will my employees keep their jobs?

Your team is the reason the business works, and we buy companies to grow them, not to cut them. Our intent is to keep the people who built the business and invest in their tools, training and opportunities.

Will the company name change?

It depends. For most of our acquisitions, we will retain the name and the business will keep operating independently. For smaller acquisitions, we may combine them with similar companies in the same area.

What does Tandem bring besides capital?

Hands-on operating help in sales, growth marketing, operations, and technology. We sit side by side with your teams to understand all of the details of how work gets done. We focus on what actually drives growth and efficiency: getting information out of inboxes, spreadsheets, filing cabinets, and people’s memory into a system that the business can rely on. Only then do we build custom software around how your team does work, so people can spend more time with customers.

How does the process work?

It starts with a confidential conversation about what you’ve built and what you want next. If there’s a fit, we make a clear offer that includes your role after closing, then plan a careful transition with you and your team. From first conversation to after closing, you work in tandem with the same people.

How long does a sale take?

It depends on the business and on how quickly you want to move. We’ll give you a realistic timeline early, and we’ll tell you quickly and honestly whether we’re the right fit. Initial conversations and review of the business typically take 1–2 weeks. From there, we would issue a non-binding LOI that gives us a 60-day period to conduct deeper due diligence and a quality of earnings study before closing. End-to-end, expect a 3-month process.

Is the conversation confidential?

Yes. Every conversation is confidential, and we share what you tell us only with the people who need it to evaluate a potential partnership.

I’m not ready to sell. Can we still talk?

Yes. We love talking with great business owners and operators regardless of their timeline to sell. We’ll give you a free look at where better tools could save your team time and help you grow, with no obligation.

I’m a broker or advisor. How do I bring you a business?

Use the contact form and choose “A broker or advisor.” Share the basics of the business and its earnings range, and we’ll respond within a few business days.

Where are you based?

We are based in the Bay Area region of California, but are evaluating and acquiring businesses across the US.

How can I use AI to improve my small business?

AI agents and custom software can help streamline and automate the manual and repetitive tasks that take up much of a business owner’s time, freeing you up to spend more time with your customers, employees, and critical projects. We see large impacts in areas such as accounting, accounts payable and receivable, quoting and estimation, project management, and compliance.
